Changing Borders, Moving Boundaries: Lessons from Thirty-five Years of Interdisciplinary and Multi-ethnic Research

THE TITLE OF MY TALK this evening is a mouthful, maybe overly ambitious, but I have been saving this topic for some thirty-five years—ever since the day I had an epiphany while teaching Colonial American History. As I was lecturing I said to myself: "These people are all dead, so who cares?" Which was immediately followed by, "I think I need to change fields."
