Bye-Bye to Magic Nails: Conversations with Korean Immigrant Women About Competence, Comfort, and Class

DORIS FRIEDENSOHN

"CONVERSATIONS" IN THE title signals my subject and method. Covering a period of almost fifteen years, they focus on the experiences of two educated, Korean-born women who began their transition to American life as manicurists in a nail salon. I paid for their labor while they tended to my body. Initially, my own professional interests provoked our exchanges. Soon they trusted me with their secrets, their ordinary struggles, and we became friends.
